Saturday Physics Honors Program -- Department of Physics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

On September 20, 2003 Professor Michael Schlesinger of the Atmospheric Sciences Department presented
"Human Induced Climate Change: An Introduction and Overview."

In his lecture about "Human-Induced Climate Change" Professor Michael Schlesinger will explain why scientists worry that, while carbon dioxide (CO2) comprises only 0.03% of the Earth's atmosphere, its projected doubling this century may change the climate significantly. He will discuss the greenhouse effect which makes Venus, with its entirely CO2 atmosphere, 520°C (936°F) warmer than it would be if Venus had no atmosphere! He will discuss if Earth's climate is sensitive to the greenhouse effect, and how scientists try to figure it out. He will also discuss how to design adaptive strategies for dealing with this issue that are robust against the issue's deep uncertainty.
