Physics Publications

The Physics Publications Office, which maintains a variety of departmental print publications, including Ph.D theses, departmental booklets, and early journal reprints, is staffed by Becky McDuffee (290U Loomis-Seitz Interpass, 244.4268 [phone]).

Theses
The Department of Physics maintains a thesis database that is searchable by author, adviser, year, and keywords. Links to electronic copies of full-text theses are available for most theses since 2001. Full-text versions of all theses are also available online from UMI.

Summary of Engineering Research
The College of Engineering provides an annual retrospective of faculty research carried out within the College during the previous calendar year. The Summary contains more than 2,000 entries, arranged by department or major laboratory, describing funded research projects and the faculty, students, and staff who are doing the work. The report also includes lists of publications, patents, and faculty awards and honors.

Research Highlights
Occasional summaries of current break-through research carried out by Physics faculty, written for the scientifically literate reader.

Physics Illinois News
Miss an issue of the alumni newsletter? Download a PDF copy or request a hard copy from the editor.

Pre-Prints and e-prints
Many of the research groups and individual faculty maintain pre-print and e-print archives.

The Physics Attic

The Bluesheet Archives
The weekly departmental newsletter; contains seminar announcements, abstracts, and other topical material, back to January 1996

Colloquium Archives
Speakers and abstracts for the weekly Physics Colloquia

The Qual Archives
The Department maintains an on-line archive of previous qualifying examination problems as a study aid for its students. This archive goes back to 1995, and the problems have been organized by subject (classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and statistical mechanics).  Solutions are not available, and no correspondence will be entered into as to how to solve these problems. So that future Illinois students may have a fresh exposure to these problems and derive the most benefit from practicing them, please do not post solutions.  These problems may be reproduced or circulated only if properly attributed to the Physics Faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"Science—The Endless Frontier"
A Report to the President by Vannevar Bush, Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, July 1945
(By popular request, we maintain a copy of this groundbreaking speech on our server.)
